Michigan’s Sleep Doctor Mattress Stores are donating 100 new mattress sets valued at over $35,000 to victims of the recent flooding in west Michigan, the company announced.

“Thousands of people were affected by the recent flooding and we wanted to do something to help these people get back to some sense of normalcy,” said Roger Wardell, president of Sleep Doctor Mattress Stores. “We are partnering with In The Image and the Red Cross to identify and distribute the mattresses to families in need.”

In The Image is a faith-based, ecumenical nonprofit that is helping to qualify families that will need the mattresses. Details are available by calling Jay Starkey, executive director of the Grand Rapids-based organization at (616) 773-5678.

Starkey said many flood victims didn’t have insurance and need dry mattresses to sleep on.

“I’m especially worried about the children, because if you don’t have a suitable mattress for children to sleep on in your home, then Child Protection Services can take them out of the home,” he said.

Grand Rapids-based Sleep Doctor operates 17 stores in Michigan and features mattress brands including Restonic, Sealy, Serta, Serta iComfort and Tempur-Pedic.
