Bedding Retailer’s Emotional Distress Case Upheld

A judge in Portland, Maine has upheld a jury verdict that awarded $7.3 million in damages for emotional distress to a furniture and bedding retailer who contended he was double-crossed by a law firm he hired, according to a report in The Portland Press Herald.

Peter Redman, who now operates Priceless Mattress & Furniture in Augusta, Maine, had won the verdict last summer against the Portland firm Bernstein Shur Sawyer & Nelson. The firm requested a new trial, but Superior Court Justice Thomas Humphrey has denied that motion.

Redman had contended that the firm worked against his interests in a dispute with his brother over control of the now-defunct Northern Mattress and Furniture Co., the Herald story said. He said the firm failed to defend him against a sexual harassment claim he said was orchestrated by his brother.
