Ikea Plans Shift to Renewable Energy by 2020

Ikea, which already has announced that it will shift to selling only LED lights by 2016, says it will make an even larger shift to renewable energy by 2020, according to a Reuters report.

The Sweden-based home furnishings giant told the news service that under its People & Planet Positive plan, the company is investing about $1.95 billion from 2009 through 2015 in solar and wind power and that “by 2020 it would produce as much renewable energy as it consumes.”

Also by 2020, Ikea said it will grow at least as many trees as it uses to make its goods.

By 2016 it plans to limit sales to energy efficient products, not just LED light bulbs, but also energy efficient appliances such as induction cookers. Ikea estimates that a shift to more efficient appliances would cut an average household’s energy use by 30%
