City Donates $10,000 to Habitat as New Ashley Store Opens

City Furniture has donated $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Broward County, sharing proceeds from its newest Ashley Furniture HomeStore recently opened on North Federal Highway on a furniture row in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

More than 100 people gathered for a reception in the showroom April 4, where Keith Koenig, president of the Top 100 company and a longtime Habitat supporter, thanked the local organization “for building hundreds of affordable homes in partnership with low-income families,” according to a release.

“We love helping families imagine and create a home environment that inspires them,” Koenig said. “Our people focus on achieving that goal in our stores, and through Habitat for Humanity, we can extend our reach to help more people fulfill their dreams.”

The donation will go toward purchasing materials to construct a home during Habitat’s annual Women’s Build this fall.

City Furniture and Ashley Furniture HomeStore showrooms in Broward County regularly encourage customers to donate their old furniture to a local Habitat ReStore home improvement thrift store. The retailer also has donated funds for two delivery trucks to help transport furniture donations and has donated truckloads of scratch-and-dent items.

City said it “is piloting the used furniture collection program in Broward, while exploring ways to play a similar role for Habitat for Humanity affiliates in all City Furniture’s southeast and southwest Florida markets.”

The company’s employees also have worked on the Habitat home named for the company, and Koenig’s wife, Doreen Koenig, is on Habitat’s board.

City operates 10 Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations and 14 City Furniture showrooms.
