A built in patio planter almost demands a small tree.\u00a0A patio tree is a great way to break up space on a patio, or fill in some dead space in the corner of your patio or deck. \u00a0 Some patios offer built in planters ideal for trees. \u00a0But which tree will work best for your needs?<\/p>\n

Landscaping<\/a> your yard can be a challenge.\u00a0 There are so many options and it can be hard to figure out which ones will work best for you\u2026and which won\u2019t work, period.\u00a0 But when trying to landscape a patio or deck, it can be even more difficult.<\/p>\n

To begin with, almost no tree labels are going to say whether or not the tree will work for patios.\u00a0 All they\u2019ll tell you is how big the tree will get, and how much light it needs.\u00a0 Maybe what zones it will grow in.\u00a0 But whether it will grow in a container? \u00a0Or in a small patch of earth surrounded by concrete or bricks?\u00a0 Not a chance it\u2019s going to say.<\/p>\n

You can try to use your common sense.\u00a0 Obviously, a weeping willow tree won\u2019t work on a patio since it needs about an acre of land all to itself.\u00a0 But what about dwarf trees?\u00a0 Fruiting trees? Evergreen trees? Palm trees?\u00a0 Are these viable options if they are growing in pots or containers?<\/p>\n

The chances a tree will work for your patio depend on a number of factors.\u00a0 How large a space you have for your tree\u2026whether you intend to plant it in the ground or leave it in a container\u2026where you live\u2026and how much light your patio gets\u2026these are a few of the things that will help you decide which tree or trees you really want on your patio!<\/p>\n

Expanding Patio Tree Options<\/h2>\n

Before you get overwhelmed, keep in mind that if a tree is potted, the chances are good that it will never grow even close to full sized.\u00a0 For example, some ficus trees can grow sixty feet tall.\u00a0 But, if the roots are contained, many will only grow about eight feet tall.\u00a0 Keeping a tree potted will help contain its growth.\u00a0 Thus greatly expanding your options.<\/p>\n

Another way to expand your tree options is to place the tree near your house.\u00a0 Usually the heat right near your home is enough to keep a tree alive while it over-winters.\u00a0 For example, if you have a palm tree growing that is only hardy to zone 9 and you live in zone 7 or 8, the radiant heat from you house may keep the plant and roots ten degrees warmer, plus the house will offer added protection from the wind.<\/p>\n

You can also expand your options if you select a tree for your patio that is a dwarf variety.\u00a0 There are a great number of fruiting and other trees that are on dwarf root stocks.\u00a0 These trees have been grafted onto a set of roots that stay quite small.\u00a0 Just give the tree new soil every couple of years.\u00a0 All you need to do is keep the tree pruned and you should have years of enjoyment from your tree \u2013 and maybe even a little summer-time fruit.<\/p>\n
